Smokybrown cockroach

Periplaneta fuliginosa

Smokybrown cockroaches are large outdoor roaches well suited to Atlanta’s warm, humid climate. They often shelter near roofs, trees, and moist landscaping, then enter homes through small gaps while searching for food, water, or protected resting places.

Smokybrown cockroach identification

Adults are roughly 1–1½ inches long, shiny, and uniformly dark mahogany to nearly black. Their wings extend beyond the abdomen, and adults can fly. Unlike American cockroaches, they lack a conspicuous pale yellow border on the head shield. Young nymphs are dark with contrasting pale bands, which can confuse identification. Oriental cockroaches are also dark, but their wings are reduced compared with the long wings of adult smokybrown roaches.

Where you'll find it in Atlanta homes

Check gutters, roof edges, tree holes, woodpiles, dense shrubs, and damp mulch around Atlanta houses. Indoors, sightings may occur in attics, upper rooms, garages, or bathrooms near entry gaps. Warm, humid weather favors activity, and rain or drying outdoor shelters can change where they appear. Porch lighting may attract flying adults at night, especially where branches, debris, or roofline openings provide a convenient route into the building.

Prevention tips

  • Clear leaves and standing debris from gutters.
  • Trim branches and shrubs away from roofs and siding.
  • Repair soffit gaps and damaged window screens.
  • Reduce damp mulch and clutter beside the house.
  • Use less attractive exterior lighting where practical and keep doors closed.

When to call a professional

Call for recurring sightings, roaches in the attic, or multiple life stages near the house. Allsect starts with an inspection to confirm the pest, locate activity, and identify conditions supporting it. Inspection may lead to roofline exclusion, moisture improvements, and recurring perimeter service directed at outdoor harborage rather than unnecessary whole-house spraying. You will receive an honest recommendation based on the findings, including whether monitoring or simple repairs may be enough.

Common questions

Why am I seeing roaches upstairs?

Smokybrown cockroaches often use trees, gutters, and roofline shelters rather than entering only at ground level. An upstairs sighting can reflect a gap near a soffit, vent, or window. Check those routes along with moisture and accumulated leaves.

Do smokybrown cockroaches fly?

Yes, adults can fly and may approach lights at night. A flying roach is not automatically a German cockroach or evidence of an indoor infestation. Identification, repeated sightings, and evidence of young roaches help determine the next step.
