Oriental cockroach

Blatta orientalis

Oriental cockroaches are dark, moisture-loving roaches often found around ground-level shelters and damp building areas. In Atlanta, reducing wet debris, drainage problems, and entry gaps is an important part of managing recurring sightings inside or near the home.

Oriental cockroach identification

Adults are about ¾–1¼ inches long, glossy dark brown to black, with broad, flattened bodies. Females have only small wing pads, while males have wings covering much of the abdomen but leaving the tip exposed. Neither sex flies. They can resemble other dark roaches, especially immature large species, but their reduced wings and heavy-looking bodies are useful clues. A specimen or clear photograph helps distinguish them from smokybrown cockroaches and dark beetles.

Where you'll find it in Atlanta homes

They favor moist crawl spaces, ground-level utility areas, floor drains, shaded foundation edges, and debris beneath porches. Outdoor shelters include wet leaves, mulch, and areas around leaking pipes. In Georgia, activity may become noticeable during mild, wet spring weather and other humid periods. Rain and poor drainage can bring them closer to buildings, while persistently damp indoor spaces may allow continuing activity even when outdoor temperatures change.

Prevention tips

  • Correct standing water and drainage problems near foundations.
  • Repair leaking pipes and reduce crawl-space moisture.
  • Remove wet leaves and debris beneath porches.
  • Seal low entry gaps and fit exterior door sweeps.
  • Keep trash areas clean and containers closed.

When to call a professional

Call when dark roaches recur around drains, crawl spaces, or damp rooms despite cleanup. Allsect starts with an inspection to confirm the pest, locate activity, and identify conditions supporting it. Allsect may recommend moisture correction, exclusion, and targeted service, including recurring perimeter work when the source is outdoors; plumbing defects need separate repair. You will receive an honest recommendation based on the findings, including whether monitoring or simple repairs may be enough.

Common questions

Is a water bug the same as this roach?

People often use “water bug” for several large cockroaches, including Oriental cockroaches, but true aquatic bugs are different insects. A photo showing the back, antennae, and wings is more useful than the nickname when choosing a management approach.

Will drying the basement help?

Reducing moisture can make a basement less suitable, especially when leaks, condensation, or poor drainage are involved. It does not close entry routes or remove every shelter. Combine drying with debris removal, exclusion, and identification if roaches continue appearing.
