Why German Roaches Keep Coming Back

You sprayed, you cleaned, and a few weeks later the German roaches are back. Here's why that happens — and what actually breaks the cycle.

If you've ever knocked back a German roach problem only to see small roaches running across the counter again a few weeks later, you're not alone. It's one of the most frustrating calls we get in Atlanta, and the reasons it happens are surprisingly consistent.

The eggs you can't see

German roaches don't lay eggs and walk away. The female carries a small egg capsule attached to her body until it's almost ready to hatch, and each capsule can hold around 30 to 40 eggs. Most sprays don't penetrate that capsule.

So even when a treatment kills a lot of adults, a new wave of young roaches can hatch over the following days and weeks. If nothing is in place to catch that next generation, the population rebuilds — fast.

Store-bought sprays can make things worse

Many over-the-counter sprays and foggers are repellent. Instead of solving the problem, they can push roaches deeper into wall voids, under cabinets, or into rooms that weren't affected before.

Repellent residue can also make professional baits less attractive. That's why we usually ask customers to stop using store-bought products once we start treatment.

They live where you don't look

German roaches prefer tight, warm spaces close to food and water:

  • Cabinet hinges and the corners of drawers
  • Behind and underneath the refrigerator, stove and dishwasher
  • Inside microwaves, toasters and coffee makers
  • Around plumbing under kitchen and bathroom sinks
  • Behind loose baseboards and electrical cover plates

If a treatment only reaches the open surfaces of a kitchen, most of the population never contacts it.

New roaches can be carried in

Even after a home is under control, German roaches can be reintroduced. They travel in cardboard boxes, grocery bags, used appliances and secondhand furniture. In apartments and condos, they can move between units through shared walls and plumbing — which is why a single unit can keep getting reinfested if neighbors also have activity.

Food and water are still available

German roaches can live on very little: grease on the stovetop, crumbs under the toaster, pet food left out overnight, or a dripping faucet. This isn't about blaming anyone — clean homes get German roaches too — but reducing those easy meals makes baits work much better.

What actually breaks the cycle

A lasting result usually comes from a combination of things rather than one big spray:

  • Careful inspection to find where roaches are hiding and breeding
  • Professional baits placed in small amounts where roaches feed
  • Growth regulators that interrupt the development of young roaches
  • Monitoring with glue traps to see where activity remains
  • Follow-up visits timed to catch the roaches that hatch after the first treatment
  • Simple preparation like sealing food and fixing leaks

That's the approach behind our German roach treatment in Atlanta. We'll be honest about how many visits your situation may need, and we'll show you what we're seeing each time we come out.

Frequently asked questions

Why do German roaches come back after spraying?+

Most sprays don't reach roaches hidden in cracks and voids, and they don't penetrate egg capsules. New roaches hatch after treatment, and repellent sprays can scatter the population instead of eliminating it.

Can German roaches come from a neighbor's apartment?+

Yes. In apartments and condos, German roaches can travel between units through shared walls and plumbing, so results are best when neighboring units are treated too.
